Handmade Scone Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon of milk for brushing the top
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small cubes
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Recipe
- Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Add the cold butter cubes to the bowl. Use your fingers to rub butter into the flour mixture and keep mixing until the texture is crumbly and resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour milk and vanilla extract into the mixture and stir gently with a spoon or spatula until the dough comes together. Do not overmix because this can make the scones hard.
- Lightly sprinkle flour on your kitchen counter and place the dough on the floured surface. Gently press the dough, and shape it into a round disc about one inch thick.
- Use a knife to cut the dough into triangular pieces, or you can use a round cutter if you prefer classic round scones. Try to keep the pieces equal in size so they bake evenly.
- Place the shaped scones on the prepared baking tray, leaving a little space between each piece so they have room to rise while baking.
- Brush the tops of the scones with a small amount of milk for that golden look.
- Put the tray in the preheated oven and bake the scones for about 12 to 15 minutes. They should rise slightly and turn light golden on top.
- Remove the tray from the oven and let the scones cool for a few minutes before serving them warm with butter, jam, or cream for the best taste.
