Learn how to make bangers and mash with onion gravy. A simple, tasty comfort food recipe that brings a classic British flavor to your table.
“Bangers and Mash” is a popular British name for sausages served with creamy mashed potatoes and gravy. The sausages are called “bangers” because, in the past, they often burst with a loud pop while cooking unless you poked them with a fork. Sometimes, they still do!

Ingredients
- 8 large baking potatoes (peel and cut into quarters)
- ½ cup milk, or as needed
- 2 teaspoons butter, divided
- 1 ½ pounds beef sausage
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 packet dry brown gravy mix
- ½ cup diced onion
- 1 cup water, or as needed
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Put the potatoes in a pan and cover them with water.
- Boil and cook for about 20 minutes, until soft.
- Drain the water, then mash the potatoes with 1 teaspoon of butter and some milk until smooth and creamy.
- Continue mashing or use a mixer until the mixture is smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Place a large pan over medium heat, and cook the sausages until thoroughly heated.
- Take them out and set them aside. Add the remaining teaspoon of butter to the pan, then cook the onions until soft.
- Make the gravy mix according to the package instructions, then pour it into the pan with the onions. Stir and simmer until the gravy becomes thick.
- Pour half of the gravy into a square baking dish to cover the bottom. Place the sausages in a layer on top of the gravy (you can cut them open if you like). Pour the rest of the gravy over the sausages, then spread the mashed potatoes on top.
- Bake without covering in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or till the potatoes turn evenly golden brown.
