Ground Beef and Cabbage Recipe
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 45 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 large head of green cabbage, chopped fine
- 1 pound (about 450 g) lean ground beef
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 can (about 400 g) diced tomatoes, with their juice
- 1 tablespoon mixed Italian herbs (or similar seasoning)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- Chop the cabbage, slice the onion, open the can of tomatoes, and measure herbs, salt, and pepper.
- In a large pot or Dutch oven over low-medium heat, put in the cabbage, onion, diced tomatoes (with juice), the herbs, salt, and pepper. Stir to mix.
- Let this mixture heat until it starts to bubble lightly. Stir occasionally so nothing sticks to the bottom.
- Crumble the ground beef over the top of the vegetable mixture. Cover the pot.
- Let everything cook together, covered, for about 45 minutes. During this time, stir the beef sometimes so it mixes with the cabbage and tomato. The cabbage should get tender, and all the flavors will come together.
- Near the end, taste and add more salt, pepper, or herbs if it needs more flavor.
- Dish it out hot. You can eat it by itself or with something like cornbread, rice, or potatoes.
Tip:
- Use lean ground beef so there isn’t too much fat, but you’ll still get good flavor.
- Don’t drain all the juices away (from the tomatoes, etc.); they help make the dish juicy and tasty.
